Why these eight days

Come close. Stay. Soften.

Paryushan (Prakrit Pajjusaṇā) is the Jain year’s deepest pause. Pari means all around; uṣaṇa is to stay — and, in an older reading, to burn. For eight days we stay close to the soul and gently burn the four kaṣāyas: anger, pride, deceit and greed. There is no feast at the end and no gifts to unwrap. The gift is a cleaner heart, and the courage to say Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ.

Śvetāmbara · eight days, ending on Samvatsari · Sep 8–15, 2026

Listen

Pravachan and the Kalpasūtra — the life of Bhagwān Mahāvīr read aloud so the whole sangh hears it together.

Look back

Pratikraman morning and evening: turn around, notice harm, ask forgiveness. Newcomers may sit quietly and follow along.

Lighten

Tapasyā is optional and personal — a full fast, a simpler plate, or one small vow kept honestly. Nobody is measuring you.

Gather

Swāmivātsalya meals, bhavnā, ārati. We eat, sing and close the day as one family.

The four kaṣāyas we come to burn

Krodha
Anger

The heat that burns others and ourselves.

Māna
Pride

The wall that will not bow.

Māyā
Deceit

The story we tell so we look better than we are.

Lobha
Greed

The hand that will not open.

Walk the eight days

A story, not just a timetable

Tap a day. Śvetāmbara Paryushan follows the Kalpasūtra — Mahāvīr’s life read aloud — and lands on Samvatsari. This year’s dates: Sep 8–15.

The day of forgiveness

🙏Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ

Day 8 · Tuesday Sep 15 · Choth · Samvatsari

The last day is the reason the other seven exist. Samvatsari Pratikraman is the annual looking-back — hours of honesty. Then we turn to every living being: if I hurt you in thought, word or deed, knowingly or not, let that wrong be fruitless. Forgive me. I forgive you. Khāmemi savve jīvā, savve jīvā khamantu me. Friendship with all; enmity with none. After the tears, the tapasvīs are honoured, and the sangh says vadhāmaṇā — congratulations on a year made new.

Try this today

Say it out loud, not only in a text. Look at people. Mean it. Then live as if you were forgiven — because you asked.

Kalpasūtra thread

The text closes with the rules of the monsoon retreat. Then the books shut, and the work becomes a sentence you will say a hundred times: Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ.

खामेमि सव्वे जीवा, सव्वे जीवा खमंतु मे। मित्ती मे सव्वभूएसु, वेरं मज्झ न केणइ॥

Khāmemi savve jīvā, savve jīvā khamantu me. Mittī me savva-bhūesu, veraṁ majjha na keṇai.

I forgive all living beings; may all living beings forgive me. I have friendship toward all, and enmity toward none.

Walk the eight days above first — then use this glossary when a ceremony name flies past. Nothing here replaces a guru or a sūtra. It is a friendly lamp in the doorway.
